Norwegian lead Manchester United faced Cardiff City for his first encounter as the United Boss, and Boy did he deliver.
Almost all the promises he made during his interview and press conference, could be seen working out on the pitch by the players. Here a few talking points from yesterday’s match:
1. Attack Attack Attack:
Even though the side put out, at first seemed to be a Mourinho side, the one that he used in most of his matches, something was different from the very first minute. United was on the front foot since the very first minute and showed that they were out there to dominate. Every pass made during the first 5-10 minutes of the game, seemed to go forward. Players running up the pitch, especially the wingbacks. Young and Shaw enjoyed full freedom going forward, with a few instances even seeing centre halves Lindelof and Jones run up to the oppositions box in open play.
2. Free Flowing Movement:
The United team yesterday with much more fluidity than usual. Players were freely moving around the pitch, with their teammates responding and taking up the space left behind. Front 3 of Rashford, Martial and Lingard were very flexible and often seen changing positions among themselves. As can be seen in Martial’s goal as scored it from the right and side as opposed to his usually preferred left. Wingbacks pushing forward meant either Herrera of Matic filling in the space left behind by them. the whole of United team seemed to move in one direction – the Opposition’s goal, except De Gea.
3. Goals Galore:
The Brilliant One-Two-Touch football goal by Martial, screamer by Rashford and Herrera, and a Brace by Jesse, with Pogba providing 2 assists. What more could you want? This was the first time Sir Alex’s Last match as United’s manager, that we have managed to score 5 goals in the Premier League. Although it was Cardiff, who sit at the bottom of the table, United haven’t been seen this confident against any of the sides they have faced before, including Derby.
4. Smiles on Everyone’s Faces – Players, Manager, Staff, Fans and Ed Woodward
Yesterday’s match was a big boost up in confidence for every in the club and to everyone who supports them. Whatever might have been the situation inside the dressing before, the players sure seemed happy and confident both on and off the pitch yesterday.
5. Defensive Problems yet to be resolved?
With a much more attacking display, now seeming to be the way that United move forward, we will now, more than ever require, some really good reinforcements in the defense. United was easily getting exposed at the back, especially when the wingbacks pushed forward, as Both Herrera and Matic were unable to deal with the pace and pressure of the Cardiff wingers. Young was easily exposed with pace on multiple occasions by Cardiff’s Josh Murphy. If this might ae been the case against a Top 6side, we might have easily been 2-3 goals down.
With some more easy run of fixtures coming ahead, we can expect United to put up a similar show and get us back in line for contending for the Top 4 spot. United now face Huddersfield at Home, on the Boxing Day. Do you think we can replicate this performance against them, or perhaps be even better?
