5 Right Wingers Manchester United Should Consider Signing in January

Manchester United have a lot of players occupying the left wing position this season with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez while Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata are always drifting to the middle whenever they are deployed on the right wing.

It is very clear and obvious that Man United have no natural right winger at their disposal which  is a big problem. Manchester United signed Brazilian Fred from Shakhtar and 19-year-old right back Diego Dalot from Porto. Those signings gave the fans hope of some additional players to come.

Surprisingly, no more signings were made apart from the free transfer of 35-year-old Lee Grant. Different complaints from Jose Mourinho during his July & August press conferences and criticism from fans and pundits alike didn’t change things, and the 2018 Summer Transfer Window ended without United making a signing.

With the incoming January transfer window, Jose will be hoping for the club can make some signings especially for the right wing positon. We take a look at 5 players who could be signed to occupy the right wing position.

#5 Nicolas Pepe

Pepe plays for Lille in Ligue 1 and has already showed his talent already at a young age of 23. Born in the Ivory Coast, he made his professional debut in 2014 in ligue 2 and since then he has been on the rise after signing a 5 year contract at Lille in 2017.

He has 8 goals and 5 assists this season and is comfortable playing on both wings. He is a type of player that loves to play direct which with his blistering pace makes him defender’s nightmare.

Although there are concerns about his defensive contribution and losing possession due to his directness, those are small issues that can be improved with more experience and coaching.

TRANSFER REPORT: He is a wanted man all around the globe with high profile clubs such as FC Barcelona, and Arsenal. There have been no reports about United being potentially interested in him.

#4 Marcus Rashford

Manchester United youth academy product that came into light during the management of Louis Van Gaal, started his career as a center forward position, but since Mourinho took over he has mostly been deployed on the wings with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku has been preferred up front by Jose.

Despite Rashford being brought up as a striker he could find some success on the right wing where he can cut inside and can send in some deadly ball through in the final third, as well as be a goal threat.

Take for instance his display against Liverpool last season when he scored a brace and his late goals all came from the wing position. For me his natural position is on the wings and not as a front-man.

#3 Ousmane Dembele

Demebele arrived at Barcelona as a replacement for the departing Neymar who went to PSG. He was exactly the player Barca needed to fill Neymar’s boots with the hope of only not matching him but even exceeding him in the near future.

Since then it has been disappointment as the 21-year-old couldn’t handle the pressure and the hype surrounding him which made him fail to make a major impact at his first season at the club. In addition to this numerous injuries and rumours of a bad attitude both on and off the pitch.

He already has five goals and an assist this season, not the numbers to be expected from him but not surprising as he’s barely had any game time.

Dembele can be described as a very skillful and creative winger with complete understanding of the game in terms of positioning and his movement and also a fast player whose pace is a nightmare for defenders. He is not your 20 goals a season type of player, his game is more directed into being a creator whether from crosses or through balls in the final third. He is capable of committing players and playing on counters.

As much as he is talented, he misplaces some passes and his decision making is not the greatest of all. But should Manchester United move for him, it would be a good buy and it would be lovely to watch him play that right wing. Just Imagine Martial-Lukaku-Dembele; a match made in heaven.

TRANSFER REPORT: Barcelona are looking for buyers as Dembele has failed to make a breakthrough at the club. There are other reports of him going out on loan but with a club like United coming with an offer, Barca won’t resist selling. There are rumours United have been in discussions with Barcelona.

#2 Federico Bernadeschi

The 24-year-old Italian is currently playing for Juventus. He is regarded as one of the brightest and talented players in Europe, whos career has unfortunately been limited to the bench as of late.

In terms of his style of play, he is fast, strong and technically adept and is also capable of playing at both wings. He is not afraid of taking on opponents as he uses his left foot to cut inside to create opportunities for himself and his team-mates. He is also a player perfect for counter attacking football.

Despite all of his strengths, he is not the greatest passer and his through balls in the final third are not what you would expect from a talented player like him.

Sir Alex tried to sign him once before, and having him at United wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

TRANSFER REPORT: Bernadeschi is open for transfer but Manchester United or any other clubs have yet to make any official bids.

#1 Douglas Costa

Despite being 28 years old, he is a player of world-class quality who can play both the left and right wing positions as well as down the middle. He is a difficult player to mark, thanks to his skill and pace. He is also equipped with the ability of making the right decisions in the final third.

With a type of player like Costa, Manchester united would be unpredictable, dangerous and clinical in attack.

TRANSFER REPORT: There are no reported offers from Manchester United.
